Our 2009 Keynote Speaker Bio: Dr. Juanita Fain, Ph.D.

 

 

Dr. Juanita P. Fain is a respected university administrator and educator who after growing up in Newark, New Jersey completed her Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, in Psychology in 1972 at Knoxville College, Knoxville, Tennessee.  In 1978, she completed a Master of Science degree in Educational Psychology at The University of Tennessee at Knoxville.  After attending the Management Development Program at Harvard University during the summer of 1987, Juanita Fain completed her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio in 1992.

 

During the span of her 36 year professional career, Dr. Fain has served in a variety of administrative positions at the University of Tennessee, Ohio University and, since 1996, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).  In her current role as Interim Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Fain is responsible for a division of over 500 staff members and manages a budget of over $62 million.  She is responsible for Enrollment and Student Services; Campus Life; The Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach; Student Wellness; and, Police Services.

 

Continuing her responsibilities as Vice President for Planning, Dr. Fain coordinated the implementation of UNLV’s strategic plan. In this capacity, she serves as the institutional liaison to the UNLV governing board, the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents.  Additionally, Dr. Fain is the appointed Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action (EEO/AA) Compliance Officer for the University. 

 

An experienced and dedicated leader, Dr. Fain has a demonstrated commitment to student learning, professional development, inclusiveness, and diversity.  These values are evidenced through the various University activities, committees, and community organizations with which she is affiliated.

 

Numerous honors and awards have acknowledged Dr. Fain's outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community service during her career at the three universities where she has served.  During her tenure at UNLV, Dr. Fain has served on the New Leadership Nevada Advisory Council to prepare and encourage female college students to pursue careers in politics, business and education.  She has participated in the Faculty/Scholar Mentoring Program and taught master’s level courses in higher education administration.  Dr. Fain’s community involvement includes membership in the Asian, Latin, Native American, and Urban Chambers of Commerce.  In addition to her membership in several national, state and regional professional associations, she is also a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. 

 

Dr. Fain includes among her greatest rewards and accomplishments her supportive and loving family.  She has been married to Robert H. Fain, III, for 35 years.  They are the proud parents of three sons and two grandchildren.
