Certification is the well-earned badge of professional achievement.  Beyond experience and education, it is the true measure of knowledge in the HRM field.  For more than a decade, the Southern Nevada Human Resource Association has been helping its members prepare for the PHR/SPHR certification exam.  A preparation study group is organized and facilitated twice a year prior to the Mid-year and End-of-year testing dates.

The registration for the 2008 Spring Study Group is now in progress.  Don’t let another year pass!  Make 2008 the year you accomplish your goal of attaining a certification to signify your high degree of knowledge and competence as a human resource management professional.

WHEN:
Tuesdays, 6-9 p.m., February 5, 2008 through April 29, 2008.

WHO: Pre-registered study group participants.  All participants must be SNHRA members.

COST: $487 (includes $50 SNHRA Study Group Registration Fee and $437 for the SHRM Learning System materials, S&H included (discounted materials are available only through the SNHRA Education Committee).  Those registering after end of business on January 25, 2008 will be charged an additional $50.

LOCATION: TBD – Participants are invited to volunteer their worksite to be used for the duration of the sessions.  The facility must be able to accommodate a minimum of 12-15 people in a manner conducive to the study needs.  The $50 participation fee will be waived if the participant’s site is used. STUDY MATERIALS: The SHRM Learning System features updated content based on HRCI’s new body of knowledge; more than 1,600 questions allow you to test your knowledge and better prepare for the certification exam; new case study that is interactive and focused on real-life situations faced by HR professionals. You will apply learned concepts in eight different scenarios and work through questions for each; and, 100-question bonus test that mimics the HRCI certification exam so you can hone your test taking skills.  (SHRM list price is $595 for members and $695 for non-members)

UNLV Certification Preparation Course

PROFESSIONAL IN HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - PHR/SPHR PREPARATION COURSE (NOTE: this course is not offered at all times by UNLV. Please check with the Continuing Education Department for availability.)

If you are a human resource professional interested in the nationally recognized and prestigious PHR or SPHR designations from the national Society for Human Resource Management, or if you are interested in increasing your knowledge about human resource issues, this intensive and comprehensive program will prepare you for that examination.  There are six key functional areas as defined by the human resource profession.  Topics to be included are strategic management, workforce planning and employment, human resource development, compensation and benefits, employee and labor relations, and occupational  health safety and security. Pass rates are consistently higher for those who take university-sponsored preparation programs.

TEST ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to sit for either exam, candidates must have TWO years exempt-level employment experience in the human resource field as an HR practitioner, HR educator, HR researcher or HR consultant. To earn the PHR or SPHR, candidates must have TWO years exempt-level experience.  No credit will be given for education.

COURSE CONTENT

The course content reflects the body-of-knowledge tested by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) for the PHR and SPHR levels of certification designation. This course of study will not guarantee or ensure success on the HRCI exam.  Students must use the most recent edition of the SHRM Learning System for the course, and are strongly advised not to use outdated materials.

TOPICS

Strategic Management - Processes and activities used to formulate HR objectives, practices and policies to meet long and short-range organizational needs and opportunities and to guide and lead the change process and to evaluate HR's contribution to organizational effectiveness.

Workforce Planning and Employment - The processes of planning, developing, implementing, administering, and performing ongoing evaluation of recruiting, hiring, orientation, and organizational exit to ensure that the workforce will meet the organization's goals and objectives.

Human Resource Development - The processes of ensuring that the skills, knowledge, abilities and performance of the workforce meet the current and future organizational and individuals needs through developing, implementing, and evaluating activities and programs addressing employee training and development, change and performance management, and the unique needs of particular employee groups.

Compensation and Benefits - The processes of analyzing, developing, implementing, administering, and performing ongoing evaluation of a total compensation and benefits system for all employee groups consistent with human resource management goals.

Employee and Labor Relations - The processes of analyzing, developing, implementing, administering and performing ongoing evaluation of the workplace relationship between employer and employee (including the collective bargaining process and union relations), in order to maintain effective relationship ss and working conditions that balance the employer's needs with the employees' rights in support of the organization's strategic objectives.

Occupational Health, Safety and Security - The processes of analyzing, developing, implementing, administering and performing ongoing evaluation of programs, practices and services to promote the physical and mental well-being of individuals in the workplace and to protect individuals and the workplace from unsafe acts, unsafe working conditions and violence.

THE FORMAT

The program is offered in  instructor-led evening sessions meeting for three hours, (Wed., 6-9pm) once a week for 12 weeks.

THE DESIGNATIONS

The Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) designations are awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI), and endorsed by the Society for Human Resource Management.  These designations provide HR generalists an opportunity to review and fine-tune their professional knowledge and skills, and functional specialists a venue to broaden their perspective and understanding of the field prior to the examination.

FEE:  $1150 for non-member of the Southern Nevada Human Resource Association (SNHRA) includes SNHRA membership for 2005/06, SHRM Learning System and test disk (a $695 value), materials, 3.6 CEUs and a  Certificate of Completion.

$1050 for members of the Southern Nevada Human Resource Association (SNHRA) includes SHRM Learning System and test disk (a $595 value), materials, 3.6 CEUs and a  Certificate of Completion.
